Keukenhof Day Trips from Amsterdam

Keukenhof opens its gates for about eight weeks a year — and it makes them count. The budget that comes with millions of visitors means the park gets to reinvent itself annually, and the result is genuinely impressive without me having to oversell it.

I visited with my wife and my mother-in-law, who had flown in from Argentina. She's not easily rattled, but Keukenhof got to her. It's a big park, so her feet paid the price — but she still brings it up, unprompted, months later. That tells you something.

One tip I'll pass on: don't let the flowers eat your entire camera roll. Every bed is a photo waiting to happen, but those shots blur together fast. Put your phone down long enough to get one or two good ones with the people you came with. You'll thank yourself later.

The flowers themselves are something else — shapes and colour combinations I hadn't seen before, and I'm Dutch. I grew up around tulips and narcissi. Keukenhof still managed to surprise me.

On getting there: the car park is enormous, but it's a solid walk to the entrance. If you're coming by public transport, buses will actually drop you off closer to the gate than most drivers end up. Check the routes and pick the hop-on point that works best for you. Either way, budget 4–5 hours if you're travelling by transit, or 2–3 if you're driving. The park rewards time, not rushing.
